Every January, thousands head for Lake Karapiro to take part in the world's largest event for waka ama (Polynesian outrigger canoes).

waka-ama-race cambridge-isiteThe Waka Ama Regatta involves more than 300 races, from 250 metres to 1,500 metres, and caters for paddlers aged seven to 70.

The event has been growing each year with more than 3,000 competitors and 5,000 spectators attending the week of racing in 2012.

The regatta is one of 30 national waka ama events staged between October and April each year by the sport's national body, Nga Kaihoe O Aotearoa (Waka Ama New Zealand).

Though the popularity of the Waka Ama Regatta fills the town, Cambridge always copes with the influx of visitors. As well as motels and B&B accommodation, the town has a number of camping options and venues capable of hosting large numbers.
