Tuatara are reptiles endemic to New Zealand and are the only surviving members of their Rhynchocephalia order, which flourished around 200 million years ago. This is wonderful opportunity to view Tuataras which were extinct on the mainland of New Zealand until 2005. Learn about the history, life cycle and physical characteristics of the tuatara and their journey to Maungatautari. Our breeding pair of Takahe may also be visible dining on their diet of grasses, once thought to be extinct; these rare birds were rediscovered in 1948.The Wetlands tour starts at 1.00 pm and last for 1½ hours.
